Temasek Trust Supports the Singapore Science Prize
The Singapore Science Prize, launched by the Asian Scientist magazine and MIT-Singapore, is awarded annually for a scholarly article published in the preceding year on science and technology that are deemed to have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the fields. The winning entry will be selected by a panel of judges comprising scientists and scholars. In addition, the winner will be offered a 3D/2N stay at Banyan Tree Bintan Villa Resort courtesy of the hotel and a special trophy designed by the Singapore Science Centre.
Taking inspiration from President John F Kennedy’s ‘moonshot’ speech of 1962, the Earthshot Prize was founded to recognise and reward individuals and organisations that are developing innovative solutions to protect and restore our planet by 2030. It is an ambitious project, but Prince William, the founder of the prize, said that the finalists’ work showed that “hope does remain.”
At the ceremony, winners were recognised for their innovations in areas such as solar-powered dryers, soil carbon marketplaces, and groups working to make electric car batteries cleaner and restore Andean forests. Other finalists included an organisation that works to combat the illegal wildlife trade and a global non-profit programme to bolster law enforcement and deter illegal fishing.
In 2023, the Earthshot Prize will be hosted in Singapore, building on the success of previous events held in Boston and London. The Singapore edition will be supported by Temasek Trust and a range of Strategic Partners including Conservation International, GenZero and Standard Chartered. With their collective expertise and resources, they will help to support the Prize’s activities in Singapore, build engagement with the community, and enable the Prize Winners to scale their environmental solutions across Asia.
Singapore is an ideal venue for the Prize, with its rich history and strong culture of innovation, and its deep connections in the region. In addition, the city is well-known for its commitment to sustainable development and urban planning, as exemplified by the work of past sgp prize winners such as Bilbao and New York City.
Temasek Trust will bring its experience and knowledge in catalytic philanthropy, blended finance and community engagement to the prize. As a founding partner of the prize, Temasek will also leverage its network to connect the Prize with a wide range of partners committed to scalable, measurable outcomes for people and our planet. Conservation International, a long-time Global Alliance Partner of the Prize, will use its deep expertise in biodiversity and sustainability financing to support the Prize in Southeast Asia and beyond. The partnership will include a series of engagements in Singapore in the run-up to and during the Awards Ceremony and Earthshot Week. Standard Chartered will also provide catalytic funding to the Prize in conjunction with its other Founding Partners. This will help the Prize to create impact and reach new audiences around the world.
