The Story of Sydney Dy Pools
Swimming is one of the most effective workouts out there, and in Sydney, where Australia’s beach culture thrives, having your own pool can be a life changer. Having your own pool means you can go for a swim at any time, without the cost of commuting and without having to worry about overcrowding. It’s also a great way to get more exercise, especially for those with joint problems. However, keeping your pool warm throughout the year can be a costly affair, both financially and for the environment. Fortunately, there are some innovative products on the market that can help you keep your swimming costs down, and reduce your environmental impact.
While nine out of 10 Australians live within 20 minutes’ drive of a public swimming facility, the quality of those facilities can vary significantly. While Inner-city councils like Parramatta have around 134,000 residents per aquatic centre, suburbs such as Mosman and Randwick have less than 14,000 residents per public pool. Meanwhile, rural and regional areas have far fewer facilities and some are only open seasonally.
The story of sdy pools is the story of how not to do an infrastructure project. Beset by council infighting, allegations of pork-barrelling and a lack of transparency, heritage concerns and criticism from health organisations, what was hoped to be the world’s most beautiful pool is now more than $100m over budget with no prospect of opening before 2025.
A’zion gives a committed performance as Kennedy, but she is not the easiest character to barrack for, and if it weren’t for the rest of the cast, Pools would be a frustrating experience rather than a compelling drama. Mason Gooding is particularly strong as a man whose desire for success comes at a cost, while Tyler Alvarez and Francesca Noel are both solid as young lovers.
With a wealth of tidal and ocean pools across Sydney’s coastline, it’s no surprise that the city has an excellent reputation as a swimmers’ paradise. For some of the best, head to Coogee for Wylie’s Baths, the tidal pool that was built by Henry Alexander Wylie, a champion long-distance swimmer, in 1907, or to the iconic McIver’s Ladies Baths, the only ocean pool in Sydney exclusively for women and children, which dates back to the 1880s.
