The Hongkong Prize 2023
The hongkong prize is one of Asia’s premier writing contests that attracts authors from around the world. Founded in 1996, the prize celebrates those who have made positive contributions to society. Previous recipients have included brain cancer survivors running an NGO to assist students with mental health issues, Zambian volunteers working at local charities and artists reinterpreting human rights through fine art concepts. This year’s prize theme ‘Our Changing World’ encourages entrants to examine global evolution socially, culturally, economically and technologically and how it affects people differently.
Winners of the hongkong prize will be given a six month internship at Hong Kong universities or laboratories, where they can collaborate with leading scientists in their field. In addition, they will be invited to attend seminars and workshops to further their knowledge of the latest advancements in the world of science.
Each HKFA nominee is reviewed by a jury of experts and selected for a nomination based on its creative, originality and the extent to which it has been translated into actual practice in the arts. Voting for the HKFA takes place January through March of each year and is open to all Hong Kong film workers. The final list of finalists is announced in April and a ceremony to honour the winners is held in May each year.
The Newspaper Society of Hong Kong aims to recognise the outstanding achievements of journalists and raise professional standards. The 2023 competition saw South China Morning Post staff pocket six prizes, including a champion and first-runners-up in the Best News Writing (English) category. City desk reporter Fiona Sun won the award for her March 2023 story on the stresses faced by carers looking after their elderly or severely ill loved ones. Subeditor Sariwati Latif also won merit for her headline: “Writing on the wall for sensitive titles” from a focus piece in May on the disappearance of books by pro-democracy figures from stores and libraries.
The HK Prize is an annual literary award for novels in Chinese, awarded by the Hong Kong Writers Association to authors who demonstrate superior writing skills and are committed to promoting Chinese literature and culture. In addition to the monetary prize, the winner will be presented with a certificate and a gold medallion, and the winning work will be published by a Hong Kong publisher. The winning novel is also entered into a worldwide competition run by the Hong Kong Book Fair and the Asia Pacific Publishers Association. The HK Prize is judged by an international panel of judges.
