The Singapore Prize 2024 Shortlist Announced

The Singapore Prize (abbreviated SLP) is a biennial award for works of fiction, poetry and non-fiction published in the four official languages of Singapore. Established in 1987, the prize recognises outstanding authors and celebrates their contributions to literary excellence.

The 2024 edition of the SLP has been announced and is open for submissions until 30 May 2024. Non-fiction and fiction works that focus on or include a significant aspect of Singapore history are eligible, as well as book-length works written in English. An expert jury panel headed by Prof Mahbubani will select the winner in October.

Jeremy Tiang’s novel Sembawang (2020, available here) and Hidayah Amin’s non-fiction Leluhur: A History of Kampong Glam are among six works that have made the shortlist for this year’s NUS Singapore History Prize. The $50,000 prize aims to stimulate engagement with Singapore’s history “widely understood”, and make its nuances more accessible, NUS said in a statement. The works on the list forego a traditional view of history as the record of big movers and shakers, and feature novels and non-fiction with a personal slant.

Design is a way of life, not just a way to make things look good. This is the message that Singapore Pools wants to share with its new TOTO Prize, which is celebrating the people behind the scene who use their skills to tackle challenges that we face in our daily lives.

TOTO, which stands for Totalisator and Lotto, is one of the oldest games in Singapore pools’ history. Launched in 1968, it was the first lottery game to offer a ‘snowballing’ feature, which allowed prize amounts to grow in case no one won, and a System Entry option, where players could choose from a fixed number of tickets. It has since evolved into the current 6 4 1 format, which was introduced in 1988.

TOTO is available at all outlets across the island, including online. There are also dedicated TOTO hotlines and customer service centres. The company has been a proud sponsor of the SGP for over 25 years, with sponsorship of the main category and other categories in both 2023 and 2024.

The third Earthshot Prize awards ceremony was held on Tuesday, with celebrities such as Oscar winner Cate Blanchet joining Britain’s Prince William on the “green carpet”. The prince praised the five winners for their solutions to climate change, adding that hope still remains, despite the challenges ahead. He also congratulated the winners on their hard work and perseverance. To mark the occasion, he wore a 10-year-old dark green suit by the sustainable designer Alexander McQueen. He was joined by other celebrities, including actors Hannah Waddingham and Sterling K. Brown, as well as singers One Republic and Bebe Rexha.
