The Singapore Prize Shortlist
The singapore prize is awarded biennially by the National Book Development Council of Singapore to recognise outstanding published works in English, Chinese, or Malay written by Singaporeans. In addition to the grand prize of S$50,000, two runners-up will receive S$20,000 each. The winning work must have made a substantial contribution to the study of Singapore history and society.
This year’s NUS Singapore History Prize shortlist includes an eclectic mix of non-fiction and fiction writing. From the examination of an iconic Indian poet’s life to histories about Malaysian migrants here, and a novel about a family in one estate across decades, these works forgo the traditional view of history as a record of big-name movers and shakers, and show us the past through laypeople’s eyes.
NUS’s history prize was founded in 2014 and is hosted by the Centre for Asian Studies, with NUS President Tharman Shanmugaratnam as guest of honour at the launch. This year, six publications are in the running for the $50,000 award. In addition to the academic work, they include novels and non-fiction with a personal slant. From an examination of the relationship between humans and animals in colonial Singapore, to the story of a family in a single estate, these books are a reminder that our past is not just a record of ‘them’, but about all of us.
