The History and Culture of Sydney Pools
Sydney pools are a beloved addition to many backyards in Sydney. They are not only a great way to stay active and socialise during the summer, but also offer incredible climate benefits throughout the year. This article takes a look at the history and culture of these iconic Sydney water spots, which have been serving swimmers for more than 100 years.
Sydney has a unique swimming pool culture, with a number of ocean pools built on the city’s wild coastline and exposed to the full force of surf. These man-made public seawater pools allow waves to wash over them, making them a part of the beach landscape and a popular swim destination all year round.
The city’s first ocean pool, Bronte Baths, opened to the public in 1887 and was a favourite hangout for swimmers and bathers. Its sandstone walls provided both beauty and protection for the swimmers who frequented it. The northern two-thirds of NSW’s coastline is dominated by sandy beaches, but at the southern end are rocky headlands that provide ideal locations for pools carved directly into rock faces.
Several other ocean pools have been built at Coogee, Bondi and Bronte since the baths’ opening, with Wylie’s Baths the oldest of them all. The pools are designed to be a refuge for swimmers during storms or dangerous rips, but they are still enjoyed by bathers and surfers when they’re not being used for training.
Aside from being a fun way to spend the day, these Sydney pools are also a symbol of a city that celebrates its diversity, tolerance and mateship. “They embody the values of equality, freedom and choice,” says Mr Baker. “They’re a place where we can all go to be together and have a laugh.”
